The Indy Peace Hospital-linked Violence Intervention Program (HVIP) embeds specially trained Indy Peace Life Coaches within IU Health Methodist Hospital to support patients impacted by gun violence directly.

Life Coaches facilitate direct referrals into the Indy Peace Fellowship program for long-term support services lasting 18 months and complete follow-up for all patients seen.

Providing Essential Resources & Emotional Support

The Indy Peace HVIP is designed for all consenting patients who have been injured by gun violence. The Indy Peace Fellowship focuses on young Black men ages 18-35, a group identified as being at high risk of violent re-injury and involvement in violent crime. The partnership also involves the broader community, including family members and caregivers, to support the recovery and safety of the patients. This approach is realized in three distinct ways:

Immediate Support

Provides resources and emotional support in the critical aftermath of gun violence.

Personalized Care

Patients are connected with the level of support based on their individual needs with Indy Peace Life Coaches, who have the experience and understanding to connect with survivors.

Long-Term Recovery

Offers intensive case management and support services for 18 months to help survivors heal and rebuild their lives free from gun violence.

The Indy Peace HVIP program tackles gun violence by intervening at a critical moment: when victims are hospitalized for gunshot injuries. This is when they're most vulnerable and likely to be involved in future violence—either as a victim or perpetrator.

A Partnership for Peace

Indy Peace HVIP is a program in partnership with the Indy Public Safety Foundation, the Office of Public Health and Safety, and IU Health Methodist Hospital, supported by the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention, which is part of the Coalition to Advance Public Safety. This collaboration leverages each partner's unique strengths and perspectives to address and reduce gun violence through a collective impact approach. Indy Peace focuses on community-based interventions, IU Health Methodist Hospital provides medical and psychological support, and the Health Alliance for Violence Intervention offers strategic guidance and advocacy. Together, we’re working to create a safer, healthier community by tackling gun violence from multiple angles.
