In 2022, Indianapolis experienced significant reductions in gun violence. The city saw a 16% drop in homicides and a 14% decrease in non-fatal shootings. Thanks to continued strategic efforts, 2023 brought continued reductions: homicides dropped by 19%, and non-fatal shootings declined by 7%. Last year, the city continued to improve, with a 34% reduction in criminal homicides and a 20% decrease in non-fatal shootings.

Indy Peace is a partnership between the Indy Public Safety Foundation and the Office of Public Health and Safety, developed as part of Mayor Hogsett’s Violence Reduction Strategy. Announced in fall 2021, the strategy is powered by $150 million in American Rescue Plan funds. It emphasizes investments in law enforcement, behavioral health services, and solutions that address the root causes of violence. It also includes peacemakers who engage with those at risk of becoming perpetrators or victims of gun violence. Since 2021, Indianapolis has experienced a more than 50% reduction in criminal homicides and a 44% reduction in non-fatal shootings since the strategy’s implementation.

The Indy Peace Fellowship refers to those participating in up to 18 months of life coaching and other enriching programming, all aimed at providing hope and opportunity. The Indy Peace Fellowship includes support with basic tasks such as resume building, housing and food resources, cognitive behavioral therapy, and more, with stipends distributed once certain goals are achieved to further incentivize participation in the program.
